The idea.

In July, 2011 two forty-something best friends sat at a beach bar in Cancun, Mexico and contemplated life, as one does. A couple of hours and a ‘respectful’ amount of Coronas later an idea was born. That idea is now this blog – Thirty Summers. An online retreat from the every day, a community of encouragement and a place to come and  escape ordinary.

The name – Why Thirty Summers?

“Thirty summers” was actually a phrase I heard a few years ago. I was 37 when I first heard it and it immediately had a powerful impact on me. The phrase, to me, means that life is precious and finite and the sands-of-time wait for no one. It highlights how important it is to make good use of the time that we are all given.

Summer is also, generally-speaking, associated with happiness, good mood, growth, fulfilling projects and making plans. All of these are concepts that we love and hopefully this tone of optimism and possibility permeates across the content that our team creates. So Thirty Summers in essence means Carpe Diem! 

A “30 Summers moment”

Thirty Summers soon morphed into the more informal “30 Summers” and quickly became the private in-term that my friend and I started using to describe anything we did where we side-stepped hum drum, escaped the norm or broke from routine.

  • A 30 Summers Getaway
  • A 30 Summers afternoon
  • A 30 Summers decision
  • A 30 Summers moment…

  2. Saxon, nice to see a Travel website that is genuinely informational based and not trying to sell product on the back of it. Your stories are great as too your images. You all look like you love what you do, it reflects in your website. Keep it up.

  3. It is a pleasant surprise to chance upon your travel/lifestyle blog. Thanks for taking the initiative to show us the extraordinary amongst mediocrity. I, too, like to see what everyone else has seen, but discover what is yet to be discovered. In particular, I love the heightened emotions engendered by the simple act of travelling; it is as if I have suddenly become more aware / conscious / alive… I would be grateful if you can please visit my blog (www.somuchtotellu.wordpress.com) and provide any feedback on whether I’m on the right track to “escaping the ordinary”? Thirty Summers is just another way of phrasing Carpe Diem really. So I’m glad it came through. I’ll tell my marketing department they’ve done a good job (Which may be odd as that’d be me too haha) Have a great NY and I look forward to following along…

      1. Thanks Saxon. I’d like to me more consistent with my posts. At times life takes over and they suffer. Love the whole idea of blogs though – seeing the world and learning through fellow bloggers. If you can’t physically travel, this is the next best thing. Cheers!
