Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did. MARK TWAIN
In July, 2013 two forty-something best friends sat at a beach bar in Cancun, Mexico and contemplated life, as one does. A couple of hours and a ‘respectful’ amount of Coronas later an idea was born. That idea is now this blog – Thirty Summers. An online retreat from the every day, a community of encouragement and a place to come and escape ordinary.
The name – Why Thirty Summers?
“Thirty summers” was actually a phrase I heard a few years ago. I was 39 when I first heard it and it immediately had a powerful impact on me. The phrase, to me, means that life is precious and finite and the sands-of-time wait for no one. It highlights how important it is to make good use of the time that we are all given. Summer is also, generally-speaking, associated with happiness, good mood, growth, fulfilling projects and making plans. All of these are concepts that we love and hopefully this tone of optimism and possibility permeates across the content that our team creates. So Thirty Summers in essence means Carpe Diem!
A “30 Summers moment”
Thirty Summers soon morphed into the more informal “30 Summers” and quickly became the private in-term that my friend and I started using to describe anything we did where we side-stepped hum drum, escaped the norm or broke from routine.
- A 30 Summers Getaway
- A 30 Summers afternoon
- A 30 Summers decision
- A 30 Summers moment…
The common denominator in the list above is having intent. That’s to say determining in advance to do something that you don’t usually do. For example both the below would be 30 Summers decisions…
- A momentous and bold move to quit your job and travel the world. WOW!
- Choosing – not to reply – to that work email you just got on a Sunday afternoon because you are enjoying time with your family at the park.
Both show the intent to escape ordinary and epitomises what thirtysummers dot com is all about!
The one minute video below captures the essence of a previous 30 Summers Getaway in the Byron Bay region of New South Wales.
The journey. Taking our idea from ‘what if’ to a website.
I am a risk averse person by nature so to get something like this off the ground was going to take something significant occurring in my life – and so it was.
Without going into a lot of detail an event occurred in my life, well a confluence of events really, that gave me cause to look at things differently. Something significant that made me re-frame my priorities and challenge status quo. I became aware that status quo doesn’t feel awful (because it’s not) but it does dull the senses to the huge scope of opportunity that lies just around the corner. The benefit of hindsight also taught me that too often the benchmarks of ‘success’ for me had been classified, and validated, by job titles and the number of zeros on my pay checks. There truly is so much more to life lurking outside the walls of an office!
So with a new attitude and outlook I dived in to getting Thirty Summers built. And now, here we are… live on the Inter Webs.
