Weekly Photo Challenge. This Week: Time.

Remember that time when you were walking through a beautiful restful park in one of Germany’s largest cities and stumbled across a surfer ‘carving-it-up’ right in the middle of the city?

No? I realise this sounds more than a little far-fetched but it did happen. Let me explain…

Surfing in Munich, Germany.

This photo is from many, many years ago. A time when I had zero responsibilities, carefree travelling days where plans for the next few days were dependant on sufficiency of travel funds and the plans of other new-found friends.

It is amazing how a photo can transport you back through time. It may not be tactile but the emotions are plenty real enough.

I remember this day so clearly.

Surf’s up. Or whatever that is auf deutsche. (In German)

I was walking through the green, sprawling expanse that is the Englisher Garten in the heart of Munich. It is an urban green oasis inter-connected by a spiders web of walkways and cycle lanes. And believe me there is so much to see there on a sunny summers day.

Beer gardens, botanical gardens, venerable stands of shady forest, sports fields, a meandering river (I’ll come back to that), more beer gardens and a nudist or two. On this day of exploration I definitely thought the exposed bottoms, and the other assorted male and female nether-regions that I had seen, were to be the most unusual sights I saw that day. But(t) I was wrong!

You can probably imagine my surprise then when I rounded a corner next to the tranquil river and happened upon a large group of excited young men dressed in wetsuits waiting their turn to jump into the churn. A single bombastic wave that spat out the newbies and exhilarated the pros a mere stones throw from the heart of the financial district. Surfing in Munich, who woulda thunk it!

Yes I remember this time so fondly and so very vividly. This walk inspired me to return to Munich on another visit. And that I did a year later. I loved it so much in fact that I ended up living and working there for about 18 months.

Although I never took up surfing I did frequent these wonderful ‘English Gardens’ every chance I could. You definitely should too if you ever visit.

Mikes Bikes.

The year I began living in Munich an entrepreneurial American lad called Mike started up bike tours through these wonderful gardens. Munich is blessed with an incredible network of bicycle lanes and that gave Mike the impetus to set up his fantastic bike tours.

22 years on and it’s still the best way to explore Munich. Particularly if you only have a day or two. If you go say “G’day” to Mike from that Aussie bloke Saxon.

Good days 🙂

Travel is my passion and also my career. I’ve spent my entire working-life in the travel industry with roles as diverse as tour guide, travel agent and marketing manager for some of the worlds largest travel brands. My favourite city in the world to visit is NYC and France is my most beloved country to explore. I travel to learn and observe to understand always with camera in hand.
